Full membership
Full membership of the Library is available to staff and students of the UOW computer network only, and Capital & Coast District Health Board. There are charges for some services. A schedule of charges is available from the Wellington Medical & Health Sciences Library Loans Desk.
Other individuals may apply for External Membership of the library, but this is only available at the discretion of the Chief Librarian. External members have different rights and privileges. Those applying for external membership should be practising health professionals or those studying towards a professional health qualification. Wellington-based University of Otago graduates working in the health professions may qualify for external membership.
Important:
For access to Wellington Medical & Health Sciences Library when it is open outside business hours (8:30 - 5:00) you will require an After Hours ID Card. Apply to the library for a card and authorisation. There is an additional fee for External Library Members.
To join the Library
CCDHB Staff need to complete a registration form and hand this in to the library Loans Desk. CCDHB staff are required to show their hospital identification when joining the library.
Full Membership entitles the users to:
- access and use the collections of the main library
- use library facilities such as Photocopiers and databases
- borrow loan materials from the main collection
- accesss the advice and knowledge of specialist librarian staff
- access informal training in the use of the library catalogue and databases
The following services are available to full members and are charged separately.
- request of materials from branches and elsewhere in the system
- interloan of materials from other New Zealand libraries and overseas
- literature searches, contents pages, current awareness and research services

External Membership
Access to library services may vary.
Free membership and after hours access is available to staff of the Wellington Cancer Society.
University of Otago graduates, Hospice staff, and Wellington Free Ambulance staff are entitled to free library access during normal opening hours. An annual fee of $56.25 applies for after hours access.
An annual fee of $260.00 (excl GST) applies to individual membership. Subject to approval. Short-term membership (minimum of 3 months) is also possible on application.
Details of annual corporate membership fees are available on application.
Fees for both individual and corporate membership include after hours access. Please note that applications for individual and corporate membership must be accompanied by a letter of recommendation stating the reasons why access to the Library is required, and are subject to approval by the Medical Librarian.
Victoria University staff and postgraduate students may apply for free library membership, but the application must be accompanied by a letter of recommendation stating the reasons for requiring access to the library.
Access to Library services
Access to library services may carry additional charges. Please see the price schedule for more information on charges for services.
Library registration entitles external members in the above categories to:
- borrow books from the collection, and view print and electronic resources in the collection
- photocopy articles from print copies of journals, within copyright regulations, in the Library
- downloading and printing of electronic documents within the library only
- Saving or e-mailing electronic files breaches the library’s licence agreements with publishers, and is not permitted
- Unless otherwise stated membership does not include offsite access to the Library’s databases and e-journal.
