  • Borrow direct (PDF) – instructions on how to use the library catalogue to request books from other NZ university libraries. This service is only available to University of Otago staff and students
  • Copyright – guidance on copyright can be found on the University of Otago website
  • Why not Wikipedia? (PDF) the library guide to the free encyclopedia. What are danger signs in Wikipedia, the good articles, the featured articles, and the pros and cons for its academic use.

Database Guides

  • CINAHL Guide (PDF) - an overview of steps involved in a CINAHL (Cumulative Index to Nursing & Allied Health Literature) search.
  • OvidSP Guide (PDF) - OVID is the name of the database provider giving access to our most comprehensive health related databases, including Medline, Embase, Psycinfo and AMED. Use the OvidSP guide to help you gain familiarity with some of the common features shared by these databases
  • EndNote X3(PDF) - an introductory guide to using EndNote X3, a tool for managing references and bibliographies. Use the guide to help you learn how to build an EndNote library and format Word documents. Exercises on using EndNote with databases and MS Word are included. Staff and students of Otago University may obtain a copy of EndNote X3 from IT Services. Please note that charges apply.

    Instructions on importing references from individual databases, links to updated import filters and guides to commonly used citation styles are available through the Otago University EndNote page.
    Online EndNote Help

    The EndNote web pages (http://www.endnote.com) offer a range of guides, FAQs and video tutorials.
    • A link a series of short videos (requires Flash Player 7) on using EndNote X3. (or download tutorials in MP4 format)
    • For solutions to commonly asked questions see the EndNote FAQs page. Alternatively see the University of Queensland’s FAQs page for a particularly useful selection of guides and answers to commonly asked questions.
