Nau mai, haere mai

The Department of Psychological Medicine consists of staff who are enthusiastic about research, teaching (and the scholarship of teaching) and clinical practice. Our core academic staff includes adult and child psychiatrists, clinical psychologists and a family therapist. In addition many senior clinicians from our two local DHB's (Hutt Valley and Capital and Coast) are engaged as Senior Clinical Lecturers.

Our research programme is configured around several themes relevant to mental health practice in the New Zealand setting:

  • Mental health service delivery and evaluation, including in primary care
  • The interface between psychological and physical health
  • Social psychiatry
  • Psychiatric epidemiology
  • Suicide
  • Education in the clinical professions

We take pride in our undergraduate and postgraduate teaching programmes. Undergraduate medical students receive mental health teaching in all three clinical years they spend at the University of Otago, Wellington. We have a summer research student most years.

The Postgraduate teaching programmes include:

  • Medical Postgraduate Training in Psychaitry leading to FRANZCP
  • Postgraduate Certificate in Health Sciences (endorsed in Cognitive Behaviour Therapy)
  • Postgraduate Certificate in Health Sciences (endorsed in Child Mental Health)
  • Postgraduate Diploma in Health Sciences (endorsed in Mental Health Rehabilitation

Other postgraduate papers convened or co-convened by department staff include HASX417 Health Sciences Research Methods, (Distance taught) and GENX710 Mental Health in Primary Care (Distance taught).

In 2008 we will be running a new postgraduate paper

  • Postgraduate Certificate in Health Sciences (endorsed in Family and Systemic Therapy (PSMX436 & PSMX437)

A number of other postgraduate qualifications and papers in mental health are taught from the Christchurch and Dunedin Schools of Medicine and Health Sciences. As many of these are distance taught they are available to students nationwide. Note that not all papers are available every year.
