Primary Mental Health Evaluation


The following gives an example of the types of services that have been implemented by PHOs with this funding.

  1. Primary Mental Health nurse based within one practice with ability to refer on for funded counselling sessions.

  2. Primary Mental Health nurse and community worker (part-time) working from PHO office. Ability to refer to pharmacist for medication reviews.

  3. Maori mental health worker, Pacific mental health worker (.5), clinical leader/ mental health worker and administrator (part time).

  4. Two primary mental health care co-ordinators, one (.5) relapse prevention co-ordinator covering all PHO practices, ability to refer for subsidised counselling.

  5. Primary mental health nurse co-ordinator (0.5) based within Iwi provider.

  6. Therapeutic recreation therapist (0.5) facilitating re-integration into the community.

  7. One Social worker, three mainstream counsellors, one Kaupapa Maori counsellor.

  8. One Maori mental health nurse, one Kaiawhina, 0.5 GP, based in Kaupapa Maori service.

  9. Mental health coordinator able to refer on for funded packages of care (incl: counselling, child care, transport, home help)

  10. One youth mental health coordinator covering three PHOs.

  11. Chronic care management programme for depression utilising decision support software with medication and CBT options.

  12. One non-clinical coordinator managing referrals from GPs to CBT and other therapies.

  13. One mental health liaison nurse and one psychologist who provides brief intervention counselling.

  14. One psychologist (in GP liaison role) managing 3 Brief intervention counsellors.

  15. Youth mental health service contracting existing providers to provide counselling, group sessions and individual activity programmes..

  16. Ability for GPs to refer on for funded CBT, process managed / facilitated by a coordinator.

  17. Mental health nurse operating in a GP liaison / health promotion role, with no caseload.
