Department of Primary Health Care & General Practice

The former Department of General Practice changed its name to the Department of Primary Health Care and General Practice on 1 May 2005.

The change of name reflects the evolution of a broader base to the department's work, especially at the postgraduate level and in its research activity. Inter-professional learning and research are actively encouraged, while teaching and research staff are recruited from a range of professional groups in the primary health care sector.

This department carries out a wide range of primary care teaching and research. The department contributes to undergraduate teaching, coordinates ethics and professional development across the Wellington School of Medicine & Health Sciences, and has an active postgraduate programme for general practitioners and other primary care professionals. The department's areas of research include mental health in primary care, health services research, women's health and communication in health care.
