Current Events at the Department of Surgery & Anaesthesia, 2010
During February the Department of Surgery & Anaesthesia convened the “Advanced Clinical Skills” module for the new incoming 4th year medical students. This year’s intake of students had taken part in the “Early Learning in Medicine” program in Dunedin during 2nd and 3rd year in which they had been exposed to basic clinical history taking and examination. The aim of the 2010 three week ACS module was to extend the students into a more advanced understanding of these important and, as far as physical examination is concerned, often neglected bedside skills.
An important initiative this year is the reallocation of “white coats” to students, these monogrammed University of Otago lab coats are being introduced to improve aspects of professionalism for our students, make our students identifiable, protect clothing and allow students to carry basic items of examination equipment. Despite the loss of the white coat in some hospitals, overseas studies are now showing that the “white coat” is in fact a highly acceptable form of dress as far as patients are concerned and should help overcome some of the confusion as to who is who in the new hospital.
At the end of the ACS module a cake competition was held with an impressive 16 entries and an unbelievable display of culinary talent.
First Prize went to Jack Newberry for his "Infectious Confection Cake"
