Associate Professor Stewart Mann
Head of Department. Dr Mann is a clinical cardiologist who has long-standing interests in clinical trials and preventive cardiology, especially the management of hypertension. He has recently widened his involvement in cardiovascular epidemiology and developed an interest in perceptions of risk and benefit of medical interventions and the interpretation of clinical trial evidence.
Professor Carl Burgess
Professor of Medicine. Major research interests
in clinical pharmacology: effects and adverse effects of beta
agonists; use of drugs in heart failure;and safe use of drug therapy.
Professor Julian Crane
Current research interests are asthma and allergic disease, effects
of domestic environment on respiratory health and harm reduction for smokers.
Dr John Delahunt
Dr Delahunt is a clinical Endocrinologist, working in general
Endocrinology and Diabetes with a special interest in bone diseases.
Dr Robin Griffiths
Dr Griffiths is the Academic Coordinator of occupational medicine and aviation medicine courses at the University of OtagoWellington which enrolls students around the world in its distance learning programme. Dr Griffiths has been a Senior Lecturer in Occupational and Aviation Medicine since 1987 when Otago University commenced its Aviation Medicine courses. Previously a lecturer in aviation medicine for the RAF and Manager of Medical Services for the New Zealand Ministry of Transport. A specialist in occupational medicine and public health medicine, Rob co-ordinates the aviation medicine courses offered by Otago University, at a Certificate, Diploma, Masters and PhD level.Rob holds consultancies to the Airways Corporation of NZ, the Transport Accident Commission, the Accident Compensation Corporation, Emirates and Etihad Airlines and other agencies around the world.
Dr Andrew Harrison
Dr Harrison is a Senior Lecturer and rheumatologist with responsibility for the rheumatology component of the 5th Year Musculoskeletal Module. Although his PhD thesis was on the basic science of inflammation, his research interests have more recently focussed on gout, rheumatoid arthritis, genetics of rheumatic diseases and health service delivery. He is a Research Consultant at the Malaghan Institute of Medical Research, and coordinates the New Zealand Rheumatology Research Network from its base at Hutt Hospital.
Dr Alister Neill
Dr Neill is a Senior Lecturer in Respiratory Medicine, convenor of the 5th year general medicine run, and Director of the WellSleep
Laboratory and Research Group. Clinical and research interests lie
in respiratory medicine with a focus on sleep breathing disorders.
He completed an M.D. examining the pathophysiology, clinical significance and treatment of obstructive sleep apnoea. Other roles are: Chair of the Specialist
Advisory Committee for Thoracic and Sleep Medicine, Research Committee Member of the
Australasian Sleep Trials Network.
Dr Mike Tweed
Dr Tweed is a Clinical Senior Lecturer and Consultant Respiratory
Physician. Academic interests include Medical Education, particularly
the field of assessment. Clinical interests include
thoracic malignancy.
Dr Kristin Wickens
DrWickens is an epidemiologist with the Wellington Asthma Research Group. She has been involved at in designing, managing and analysing a number of studies 1) to examine risk factors for asthma and 2) to examine determinants of indoor bio-contaminant levels. This has included the Infant Cohort Study, a number of risk factor studies, and a randomised controlled trial of the effects of probiotics on the development of eczema and atopy in infancy. She has also published in the area of obesity and asthma.
Rob Siebers
Rob Siebers, FIBiol, FNZIMLS, FNZIC, is a Senior Research Fellow
in the Wellington Asthma Research Group and directs its research laboratories. His current research
interests are in the role of indoor allergens (house dust mite,
pets, cockroach, fungi) and bacterial endotoxin in allergic diseases, including asthma
and atopy. He is also Editor of the New Zealand Journal of Medical
Laboratory Science.
Dr Brent Caldwell
Current research interests are asthma and allergic disease; effects of domestic environment on respiratory health; and nicotine replacement therapies.
Dr Tristram Ingham
Clinical Research Fellow with the Wellington Asthma Research Group. Currently involved with a number of epidemiological and clinical studies. Major research interests are asthma (particularly among Māori), bronchiolitis, the role of vitamin D in respiratory health, and sleep disordered breathing.
Bernadette Jones
Bernadette is a Registered Nurse and Research Fellow. She has spent the past few years working on an allergy prevention study, trialling the use of probiotics in mothers and their babies. She is currently working as Principal Investigator on the Pukapuka Hauora Study, which is a Qualitative study, using Kaupapa Māori research, and looking at Māori parents’ experiences managing a child with asthma.
Jackie Bell
Coordinates 4th year gastroenterology run and 5th year general medicine and subspecialties.
Alison Edmonds
Alison works primarily for Professors Carl Burgess and Julian Crane in a PA support role and has done so since 2005. She is also the administrator for Trainee Interns in Medicine and 4th year Medicine students. She has been with the Department of Medicine since 2001 working with undergraduate medical students in module administration and undertaking a variety of general administrative duties within the department.
Karyn O'Keeffe
Sleep Physiologist at WellSleep, Sleep Investigation Centre and Research Groups. Current research interests include cardioventilatory coupling during sleep, cardiovascular consequences of sleep-disordered breathing, CPAP treatment compliance and acceptance and insomnia. Other roles include: PhD Student, Physiological Rhythms Unit, Department Surgery & Anaesthesia; Junior Research Fellow, Sleep/Wake Research Centre, Massey University Wellington; newsletter Editor for the Australasian Sleep Technologists' Association.
