Department of Medicine

Members of the Department of Medicine teach and engage in research over a wide field of medicine, emphasising conditions which are common within New Zealand and which are treated by non-surgical means.

We are also committed to postgraduate medical education. Many subspecialties of medicine are represented in the clinical interests of our staff who include a large number of senior specialists from the hospitals who are appointed as clinical readers and lecturers.

The Department is active and productive in many areas of medical research including disease mechanisms, new treatments and clinical trials of treatment. Members of the Department regularly present their findings at local, national and international meetings.

We are also concerned with aspects of the delivery of health services and application of new technologies in diagnosis, treatment and teaching.
