Postgraduate Certificate in Health Sciences (Clinical Rehabilitation) - Information for Service Managers

Information for Service Managers

Please refer to "Information for students" for more general information about the course. This provides information that we think that you, as a Service Manager, might need to know about the course and how it might affect you and your Service.

How many students can enrol from our service?

There are 20 places available nationally which need to be divided between Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin. We reserve the right to balance numbers from different disciplines rather than a strictly geographical split of numbers. Centres other than the four main ones listed here may be considered.

Which students should I recommend for the course?

That is up to you. Apart from meeting the qualification criteria, you need to decide which students are likely to get the most out of the course, and the opportunities for further study that the course opens up (like Masters programmes), and which students will contribute the most back to your Service. Students must also be 0.8 of a fulltime position.

Who will the clinical mentors be?

The mentor would need to be someone with substantial clinical experience, preferably a graduate of the Post-Graduate Certificate or Diploma in Rehabilitation and the desire to help train others. It is essential that the students are closely involved in the process of selecting their mentor. All clinical mentors will receive guidance about the mentorship process and their responsibilities. From our experience this year the group mentoring process provided for a much richer environment for both mentors and students, than working one-to-one. We therefore suggest a 1:3 or 1:4 ratio.

How do we benefit?

The PG Certificate provides an opportunity for rehabilitation clinicians to extend their knowledge of evidence-based theoretical and clinical concepts, which will hopefully be reflected in their clinical practice within your Service. The Certificate will also be a valuable stand-alone qualification for some staff or a "stepping-stone" to further study for others.

This year we also have a fulltime lecturer to oversee and develop the programme over the course of the year. As a consequence of this one of our goals for the first semester is to provide face-to-face contact between the Academic Co-ordinator and your Service. This will provide an opportunity to discuss course processes such as Clinical Mentoring.

Services will receive a payment for student "time release" to attend the regional workshop. This will be paid at $20/hour per student. In addition, services will be paid for clinical mentor's time at $40/hour + GST; we are allowing 90 minutes per fortnight for each mentoring session.

Do I need to provide any other logistic support for students?

Allocation of study leave and contribution to study leave expenses (including travel and accommodation) is at the discretion of the clinical service although we would hope that services would be generous in this regard. Access to the Internet for students would be an advantage for web-based aspects of the course as well as for finding up to date resources and using library facilities available on-line.
