Health research improves the health of all New Zealanders. The University of Otago, Wellington, currently conducts wide ranging health related research and has a proven national and international reputation for research excellence. The School is also an organization which has a high reputation as a training centre for health professionals including medical researchers. Health research is a vital part of our drive for a healthier, more productive society. It is one of our prime reasons for existence as an organization. We are committed to the ongoing development of New Zealand's clinicians and scientists.
The largest research group within the School which is investigating respiratory disease is the Wellington Asthma Research Group (WARG).

The Department of Public Health's five research concentrations are focused the following areas: Housing and Health, Environment and Health, Health Services Research, Maori Health, and Society and Health.

The role of the University of Otago, Wellington Research office is to provide support to staff and students involved in research and provide liaison services on behalf of the Research & International Office, University of Otago.

Summer Studentship Programme

The University of Otago Wellington supports a Summer Studentship programme aimed at giving undergraduate medical and science students their first introduction into research and is a very important opportunity to encourage and foster future NZ researchers.

The Programme relies heavily on the generosity of various external organization that fund an educational grant for each of the projects.
